Tantalum is a rare, high-melting metal that is distinguished by its exceptional corrosion resistance and chemical stability. The material is practically inert to most acids and aggressive chemical environments and retains its properties even at very high temperatures. Thanks to its biocompatibility, tantalum is used both in advanced industrial processes and in medical technology applications.
Tantalum belongs to the group of high-strength refractory metals and is characterized by a very high melting point, low chemical reactivity and excellent ductility. The metal spontaneously forms a very stable and dense oxide layer (Ta2O5) that protects the surface against further attack, making tantalum superior to many other materials in highly corrosive environments. The material is also easy to cold-form and can be processed into very thin sheets and complex geometries.
Type: Refractory metal
Element: Ta (atomic number 73)
Structure: Body-centered cubic (BCC)
Designations: Tantalum, Ta, ASTM B365, ASTM B521
Chemical process industry
Reactors, heat exchangers, condensers and piping systems where extreme chemical resistance is required.
Medical technology
Implants, orthopedic components and surgical instruments due to the material's biocompatibility.
Electronics
Capacitors and components where high reliability and long service life are essential.
Tantalum is practically resistant to hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfuric acid and even aqua regia at normal temperatures. The protective tantalum oxide layer is very stable and self-healing, making the material the first choice in process environments where other metals quickly degrade.
